The University of Toronto at Mississauga’s Instructional Centre presents new possibilities for social and intellectual engagement both during classes and beyond. The Centre’s luxurious materials, smart classrooms, inviting public spaces and environmental features demonstrate the University of Toronto’s commitment to strengthening the educational experience with inspirational architecture and sustainable principles that are increasing the pleasure and wellbeing of its students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

The earthy, green hues of the building’s copper exterior resonate with the green surroundings and the rich wood panels of the Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre’s facade. Pre-patinated copper was chosen to integrate the building with the pastoral setting and also so that, parallel to a student’s educational experience, the panels will develop and mature over time.

Increasing the campus’ classroom space by 50 percent, the Instructional Centre offers teaching spaces of various types and sizes, including 500-seat and 350-seat lecture theatres and a range of smart classrooms that support collaborative and project based learning. Outdoor seating, increased paths and spaces for gatherings and recreation appear to flow directly into the building’s interior lounges, enticing students to enjoy campus life. The copper cladding also continues from the exterior into the main interior, further emphasizing the connection between the campus and the building.

A series of soaring public spaces filled with natural light and campus views connect three stacks of stateof- the art classrooms. The feature stair moves people efficiently between levels, minimizing the need for elevators and maximizing the potential exchange. With generous landings, the stair encourages interaction and offers a platform from which to see and be seen. As classes change, the movement and hum of the students rises to a controlled crescendo as they wind their way through the gentle circuit of bridge linkages and attenuated stairs. Once classes are in session, the interior becomes calm and quiet again, with students settling into a series of informal learning environments?leaning on the wood balustrades, gathering at tables that appear to float in the treetops or relaxing in quiet lounge areas with comfortable armchairs and sweeping campus views.

As students circulate, they become aware of many of the building’s sustainable elements as design features. Photovoltaic panels mounted on the southern curtain wall generate clean energy, while simultaneously shading the main east west corridor and feature stair. Third floor student lounges overlook south-facing green roofs that are planted with indigenous meadow grasses. These improve insulation and collect runoff storm water that is processed onsite. Also the building is heated and cooled by a geothermal system hidden beneath the adjacent playing field.

The land for construction of a house in the Jizera Mountains slightly slopes towards the east. On the plot there are two mature lime trees and the land to the west overlooks a meadow. The eastern boundary of the land forms an access road at which the remote vistas of mountains ridge open. To the south of the building there is a central part of the village with baroque rectory, church and former school.

The house faces to the central area of the village and offers an outlook between the church and the school. To allow for an expansive view of the Giant Mountains, the upper floor hosts the largest window in the home. The house is located behind the lime trees, with the edge of the roof running parallel to the contours of the topography, similar to many buildings in the vicinity.

The formal composition of the house is based on the scales and roof shapes of local styling. Clear and comprehensible shapes are created by the gabled roof, reinforced by a unified wooden cover and highlighted by walls constructed of upright planks. A dormer penetrates the main mass of the house, bringing the attic closer to the tops of the lime trees, allowing better views of the Giant Mountains.

The ground floor, whose main entrance faces east, is divided into living areas oriented towards the village and to the southeast. Facilities and bedrooms are also given a view to the east. The upper floor is currently designed as open space, without completion of its dispositions. Later there will be a second bathroom, workroom and bedrooms.

Aamer Architects have designed the Dalvey Estate in Singapore.

Bold in form and fluid in function, the Longhouse @ Dalvey Estate is conceived from merging the tropical language with contemporary lines and structure. The design reinterprets the traditional Iban Longhouse, with family communal areas outside the bedrooms to foster family integration.

With the inward-looking orientation of the house, its facade and presence from the main road is kept subtle and non-descript, giving only little hints of what lies beyond. A ‘paper-thin’ concrete box, delicately lined with rich timber, greets visitors upon entry. It aptly frames the entrance, with its sheer form and structural gymnastics, appearing almost floating off a void.

The scheme is characterized by its prominent louvered ‘drum’ that houses the main bedrooms and private domain of the house. Spatial strategy and articulation of this drum aim to minimize use of walls, allow generous spill of filtered daylight and fluid circulation between bedrooms, linked by semi-outdoor verandahs.

A mezzanine-floored residence consisting of a single-roomed space, located on a fan-shaped site.

The movements of the sun can be felt inside the house all throughout the year. Light coming from the east strikes the louvered boards before entering the house and reaching deep into its interior.

Direct sunlight from the south traces a shower-like path of lines as it penetrates into the building. Light coming from the west reflects off the walls of this house with an open stairwell before entering it.

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia designed the Endesa Pavilion, as part of the Smart City Expo in Barcelona, Spain.

The structure brings the distributed intelligence concept to the realm of architecture through a multiscalar aproach. The project aims to define an adaptative constructive system able to respond each solicitation at the lowest scale. By doing this, each single module could answer to his own structural, energetical and enviromental needings. The skin will act as a network of inteligent nodes, a “solar brick” that protects from the solar radiation, collects and storage the energy the data at the local scale.

During one year it will perform as a meeting point for knowledge interchange as well as a benchmark for smart grid technologies.

Distributed intelligence

The project is an exercise in which a building, under the guidance of the block type of Barcelona, is adapted by adding a series of modules on its facade. These modules, which are seen as triangular pieces section, make possible for the building to optimize energy and spatial intelligence. Its size and components vary depending on the orientation and inclination of the sun, the relationship with the environment and other technical needs.

Therefore, by varying their parts, the system we apply is not the repetition of a formal standard, but the repetition of a logic that is distributed through these modules.

In terms of energy, these pieces have in their top photovoltaic panels (1) for solar energy capture. They are also equipped with superior protection, as a visor or forward (2), or side panels (3) to provide passive protection against solar radiation during the hot months, or allow radiation to enter during the cold months.

The building is therefore playing with the orientation.

Another objective that we pursue is to maximize the extent of interior space. This will get accommodation facilities and storage space for the side modules, leaving the space free of obstacles.

Endesa’s pavilion is the result of the orientation game through the use of these modules perimeter. The design and position of these front modules not only depend on the orientation but also the relationship the building has with its environment.

Forms follow energy

In Barcelona´s block type, where the corner chamfers look at each of the cardinal points, we get two fronts from the south (SE and SW) and two from the north (NW and NE).

The photovoltaic energy capture is housed in the facade from the south and on the cover. The inclinations of these panels vary depending on the main orientations.

The southerly facades are equipped with modules ready for when the winter solar radiation gets inside, with maximum inclinations around 30 degrees, heat accumulating greenhouse gases. And for summer solar radiation, with maximum inclinations about 70 degrees, do not go inside, latter case also provides vertical protections to protect from the sun under the summer.

Therefore in winter the windows will be sunny, heat gain and in summer the windows are in shade, avoid heat gain.

The facades from the north are closed. They tend to protect themselves because they do not receive sunlight in winter. House and bathroom facilities make a thermal barrier to the most unprotected part from the cold.

Solar material

We built a solar house with solar material. Wood is a living material that grows in the sun. It is an inexhaustible material produced in culture. Is a soft, accessible, easy to work, adapt and join. It’s a warm material, which provides high thermal insulation.

The wood that has been built the pavilion comes from several sources: the structure and main panels belong to the Filand forest crops.

Digital Fabrication

The software design has been carried out using parametric tools. These tools allow us to govern the project using the criteria outlined above, but translated by mathematical equations that produce and alter the geometry of the building. The parameters defined geometry are based on solar inclination, orientation and openings to the outside.

The system that is proposed is designed to be fabricated by CNC machines, that provide high execution speed. In fact, the pavilion has been built in one month term. This is possible thanks to the production of parts that are defined in digital format string and cut into very quickly, even if they are completely different from each other. In addition, we expect that wood is a material easy to cut and carry.

MPR Design Group have designed the Hewlett House overlooking Bronte Beach in Sydney, Australia.

Description from the architects:

The long standing client is a builder whom we have successfully worked with on several projects previously. He was open to ideas and had an ability to build complex forms and intricate details. The brief was for a modern family home to accommodate a couple and their three children. The house is located on the northern flank of the Bronte gully with views towards Bronte beach and the coastline beyond.

Our design response was to place the living spaces on the upper floor as better views and more light were available. The bedrooms were located on the middle floor as this was more private and enclosed. The lowest floor has a rumpus area linking the garden and swimming pool to the house.

The underlying design intent was to explore the notion of “prospect and refuge” within a contemporary family house. The “prospect” was the beach and coast views to the south of the site which change constantly depending on the season, weather and time of day. The “refuge” was the other desirable character where we created a quality of space that provides a sense of sanctuary, enclosure and comfort.

These two driving desires for the house were explored and accommodated through devising two sculpted concrete forms responding to their particular use. The forms are rounded at the edges similar to tubes which are independent of each other enabling the upper tube to twist towards the view.

The upper tube is open-ended which allows the northern winter sun to penetrate deeply into the living spaces while allowing an unimpeded outlook to the southern view. The form also provides efficient passive ventilation drawing the prevailing north-east breeze through the house.

On the two lower levels the character of the spaces changes to places of privacy and refuge. The middle tube houses the bedrooms, each with a different aspect and outlook. The lower level has a cave like atmosphere with the room formed by a cut bedrock wall and a dark stone floor connecting the internal and external spaces. The pool provides a water element spanning between the rock wall and the garden.

The house boldly sits as a modern insertion into the typically poor building stock of its surrounding environment. The context is of varying building styles, scales and materials so the house creates a deliberate contrast in form and colour. The homogenous appearance of the house allows the forms to be emphasised by sun and shadow with the play of light continually shifting and moving with the path of the sun.

Detail elements have drawn upon surrounding natural forms for inspiration. For example, the angled bands on the front facade reference the tree branches of the native eucalyptus. They also serve as a privacy screen for the dining space behind the facade.
